Chapter Thirteen

The Café de la Boule d’Or adjoined the hotel of the same name, where Alec and Sarah were staying the night in Limoge. It was a distance from the railway station but had been highly recommended by the station master. Alec guessed that the gentleman in question received a certain recompense from the hotel for making such recommendations to passengers, but was content to acquiesce.

The food at the café-restaurant was certainly excellent and they were glad to be able to relax after being cooped up in the train compartment for so many hours. It was late when they got to the hotel but the evening was warm and pleasant and, sitting on the terrasse, they sipped their coffee and watched the world go by.

“What time do we have to leave tomorrow, Alec?” asked Sarah.

“Not too early, I’m glad to say. The train departs at 9:38 a.m., according to the timetable.”

“And what time do we get to Périgueux?”

“We should be there by early afternoon, I believe. I would like to push on from there for Gurat as soon as possible, though we may have to make an early start the next morning. That would then leave us plenty of time to find reasonable accommodation when we do get to Gurat. I doubt there are any hotels as such in the village, but I am sure there will be an inn or other place not too uncomfortable.”

“I’m not worried,” said Sarah. “I know how important this is to you, and to Inspector Kent, but I am almost feeling as though I am on holiday!” She smiled at him over the rim of her coffee cup. Then she became serious. “I have to keep reminding myself that this is all to do with a plot to kill the queen, not to mention the intentions of this Illuminati to take over the world.”

“Indeed.” Alec nodded his head, equally serious.

“When we get to Périgueux I will take the opportunity to write to Inspector Kent,” continued Sarah. “I need to send a lengthy communication to bring him up to date, so far as I am able. I can then post it in Périgueux.”

“Yes,” said Alec. “The post offices in Paris were open until 9 p.m. I don’t know if that will be the case in a small town but since we get there at noon there should be no problem.” He put down his empty coffee cup. “I must send in my own report to the good Inspector.” He looked across toward the clock on the Church of St. Pierre. “Perhaps we should be getting back to the hotel so that we can start on our reports?”
